It is viewed by human rights groups that the military regime in Burma is among the most repressive regimes in the world. It has been described as a "police state."

There appears to be no freedom of speech or assembly.

It is reported that average Burmese people are afraid to speak to foreigners except in the most superficial manner for fear of being taken in by authorities for questioning.
