Chicago, Mar. 23, 2009
As the McCormick Freedom Museum embarks on an expanded
journey to promote the benefits of lifelong civic engagement to students , we continue to stand
by our commitment to actively engage citizens of all ages in the dialogue surrounding the First
Amendment and the role it plays in the ongoing struggle to define freedom. The Freedom
Museum is proud to offer a robust schedule of public programs in April that includes a
discussion with Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai that promises to be fascinating look at her
work.
"The Freedom Museum is deeply committed to continuing the freedom discussion in the city of
Chicago,” said Nathan Richie, exhibits and programs director, Freedom Museum. "One way
we're doing this is by continuing to provide high-quality programming on contemporary issues
that resonate with people in the U.S. and around the globe."
This April, be a part of the discussion as the Freedom Museum brings you an exciting line-up of
programs that talk about relevant and controversial freedom issues. To keep on top of the
Freedom Museum’s extensive 2009 program schedule, check out our new interactive Web
calendar at FreedomMuseum.US and become a fan of the Museum on Facebook.
Upcoming April programs include:
Table of Nations: Scotland (April 1, 6-8 pm), $35 general admission, $25 Freedom Museum and
Illinois St. Andrews Society members
Location: The Globe Pub, 1934 W. Irving Park Rd.
Celebrate Tartan Day with this interesting and delicious program about Scotland. Since the
days of William Wallace and before, Scotland's independence has been asserted and
contested through colorful campaigns such as the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh and The Rough
Wooing. Scotland came under British rule in 1707, but still today there are several political
parties and groups who advocate for Scottish independence and secession from Britain. Is
independence viable for the Scots? Dine on traditional Scottish fare (and savor traditional
Scottish pints) while discussing the modern Scottish Independence movement.
Free Thinkers Series: Wangari Maathai (April 15, 6:30-8 pm), Free Admission
Location: Thorne Auditorium, 375 E. Chicago
Hear the stirring and eloquent words of Prof. Wangari Maatha, recognized as on of the most
prominent and influential voices for environmental protection and human rights in the world. In
1977, Maathai founded The Green Belt Movement, an organization that promotes reforestation
through large scale tree-plantings. The program has employed hundreds of village women, who aid in reforestation efforts and earn income necessary for family survival. Numerous
awards have been bestowed on Maathai including the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
Join the Freedom Museum for a fascinating discussion with this remarkable individual who is
also the focus of a new PBS documentary Taking Root.
Discussion with Author Thomas Buergenthal (April 23, 6:30-8:30 pm), Free Admission
Location: Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie
Join the Freedom Museum for a moving discussion with author Thomas Buergenthal
surrounding his novel A Lucky Child. The novel accounts his life as a young boy of 10 held
prisoner at Auschwitz. With luck and wit he managed to survive the ghetto of Kielce and two
labor camps all the while miraculously experiencing a few wonders of childhood.
First 100 Days of the Obama Presidency (April 30, 6-7:30 pm)
Location: TBD (Tentatively: DuSable Museum of African American History)
Free Admission
The First 100 Days of a presidency are critical to instilling confidence and stabilizing a nation in
crisis. Many similarities have already been drawn between the challenges facing President Barack Obama and Franklin Delano Roosevelt during their first 100 days in office. FDR
proposed the “New Deal” and is said to have sent Congress a record number of bills to pass.
Join the Freedom Museum and a distinguished group of panelists as we discuss President
Obama’s first 100 days in office, and its significance to the economy and our role in the world.
Reservations to all Freedom Museum programs are required. To RSVP call 312.222.7871
