Revo-movement: Urban Arts Movements and the First Amendment

How does this program relate to the First Amendment? 
This program addresses the importance of Freedoms of Speech and Assembly as they apply to artists of various colors and genders utilized their craft to aide in movements that promoted the civic and political progression of disenfranchised people of America.
 
What will students learn from the program?
The students will learn about the music, poetry and artistry of artists like; Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Nikki Giovanni, Gil Scott Heron, Santana, Jacob Lawrence, Queen Latifah, etc.  They will also gain knowledge of socio-artistic movements of the Harlem Renaissance, Black Arts Movement, Woodstock and early Hip Hop. 
 
In what ways is the program hands-on or interactive?
young will perform spoken word pieces, students will listen and/or view the artwork from the featured artists. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in a group performance.
