The Facets of Journalism
How Everyday Stories Relate to the First Amendment

Speaker: Erin Calandriello

How does this program relate to the First Amendment?
Every day, the First Amendment comes into play for a journalist. Journalists express their right to free speech daily and their speech is published. Ms. Calandriello will discuss how she comes across and works around barriers of censorship, digging to find what’s beneath the surface, using examples from her own reporting (Facebook, censorship of the War, campaign contributions).

What will students learn from the program?
Students will learn how a journalist deals with the First Amendment on a regular basis and how students can relate to current issues.

In what ways is the program hands-on or interactive?
Newspapers, blogs, photos and articles on laptop, magazines and videos will be used as resources during the program. Utilizing worksheets, Ms. Calandriello will brainstorm story ideas with the group and then ask the students how they’d go about writing a specific story and what First Amendment issues might arise when covering that story.
